LCIC Partners to Promote the Manufacturing and Purchasing of Green Products
On August 29, 2007 the Northwest Ohio Green Products Center was introduced to the public. The launch was hosted by Spartan Chemical Company at their headquarters in Maumee, Ohio. The manufacturing and purchasing of green products makes good sense, poses economic value to the local economy, supports a cleaner environment for future generations and reduces dependence on foreign materials suppliers. The Northwest Ohio Green Products Center is a community-based initiative created to establish Toledo and Northwest Ohio as a center for the development, production and use of products made from earth-friendly, renewable biobased materials; materials composed, in whole or significant part, from renewable plant or animal materials rather than synthetic chemicals or hydrocarbon or petroleum-based ingredients. The Center supports economic development in the region by linking companies and entrepreneurs to resources for expanding the green product marketplace. It provides direction and technical assistance for the creation of products and identification of procurement potential within the federal government.
The Northwest Ohio Green Products Center is a collaborative effort among several partnering organizations, including the LCIC, to provide the resources, technical assistance and business expertise to regional entrepreneurs or established manufacturers who currently produce, or plan to produce, green or biobased products. As a leader in alternative energy and advancing new technology, coupled with a unique manufacturing base and strong agricultural presence, Northwest Ohio serves as a prime location for continued green product development.
For more information on the Center, please visit their website at www.nwohiogreenproducts.org.
In conjunction with these efforts, the Center is working to promote the USDA’s BioPreferred Program. The BioPreferred program is a biobased products procurement program, requiring federal government agencies to give purchasing preferences to businesses that provide products composed totally, or in large part, of renewable domestic, agricultural or forestry materials.
